Spammers on dA

Tue Apr 24, 2012, 8:11 AM
So, over the last 6 or so months people have been noticing that deviantART has been getting hit by malicious spammers.

The current trend of these spammers is to favourite an image of yours and then when you reply on their page you get a message along the lines of "I really liked your work. Hey I just got this free X Item and thought I should share it with you." These are all spammers, the links lead to potentially malicious sites. We have been blacklisting these websites and banning all the spammers we can find.

However we need your support in this, we need you to report them too us. We have a section of the help desk dedicated to reports about these accounts, it's titled "Spammer Reports". Tickets in that section are handled within 48 hours during the working week. But unfortunately I've been noticing a tendency that some of these accounts can last for days without being reported. People are aware of them because they're commenting on the profiles stating that they're spammers, but we need these accounts to be reported to us.

If you see a spammer account please file a Spammer Report ticket and encourage others to do so in the future. It only takes one ticket to get an issue solved, but without that one ticket we aren't going to be aware of the issue :)

Reported one of them named ~triplecks. BTW would you still be able to find the comment even if I mark it as spam?

Yeah this sucks. They do it on Youtube too and like their own comment to make it a top comment. Super lame.

Except what if they were asking thier friends to come rp with them?

I said to all 23 of my friends "Hey guys, would any of you like to rp?" and when I tried to send the last one, a message popped up saying "The system cannot let you post another comment due to thinking it is spam" and I was very confused. Would that make me a spammer?

That's an automated system message because you're sending too many identical comments in a short period of time.

This journal is specifically about automated spam accounts that do nothing but favourite deviations and then reply to you with a spammy link when you thank them for it.

Just a few questions -

dA's FAQ defines spamming as a means of commercial advertisement, but is it also considered spam if a user posts links to user-generated material in a spam-like fashion? YouTube videos are a common example.

What about deviants trying to profit from referral programs, and using dA as a means of referring people, also in a spam-like fashion? This is still indirect (and free) commercial advertising for websites.

Thanks

That would depend on the amount they were doing it.

Generally we don't ban genuine deviants for low level spamming of things like chainmail, youtube links or referers, unless it's malicious content. Mostly we advise blocking and hiding there.

If it's all or most of what they do then we will take further action.

:)

If I may ask a question:
If a person makes 16 accounts just to spam (more like troll), is that worth IP ban or just normal ban on the created accounts?
(yes, it was already reported to the help desk)

thank you

i have to agree with most but this: "The current trend of these spammers is to favourite an image of yours and then when you reply on their page you get a message along the lines of "I really liked your work" because just a minute ago, i commented on how i really enjoyed someones art and faved it. it was truthful.

Read the rest of the quote.

"I really liked your work. Hey I just got this free X Item and thought I should share it with you."

That is a current trend in spammer comments, they're automated, they favourite things and then reply when you thank them for it. We're banning dozens of these accounts weekly. I'm not saying that everyone who says they appreciate art is a spammer, I'm saying there's a particular trend in the way they are doing it, in an attempt to look legitimate.

Someone linked me some illegal downloadable material after going like "you have a pretty gallery". Do I report them under spam or is there another catagory for that?

If the account is only doing that then yes, that is a spam account and should be reported to us.

Mmmm... I have a rather generic response to thank you messages, but when I do link, I don't link to other sites usually. I tend to link to other artists here on dA.

I don't mean actual users here. These are accounts that serve no purpose other than to favourite stuff and then reply with a link to some other website that is usually fraudulent or malicious.

Ah, mm-kay.

(I deactivated my other account for a couple of days because my block list somehow cleared when I went to update it. I only had a few people on there, but it was for good reason. Now it's empty and I'm taking no chances of them returning.) That reminds me.... Will my art and what-not be restored when I reactivate after 48 hours?

So it's not enough to click on the 'report spam' button that shows up on the top right corner when their comment hits your inbox?

That flags it on the spam administration page and hides it, however that method isn't good enough to actually find these spammers. That tool gets used for a whole variety of things, most of the time it's used for hiding comments people really don't want, plus we get it used so many times a day that right now we don't have the ability to search through the reports.

Oh ok... so basically it got down to some sort of hidden comment button? Does this mean that when people flag non spam comments as spam these will stay hidden... forever? :noes:

Thanks for the info! I kinda always assumed that the helpdesk one was for when the spammers are spamming others... :highfive:

We can unmark comments as spam and so it's not a forever thing.

We get more comments marked as spam than the team could handle in a day. Again, most of them aren't actually spam related.

Yeah, I got that, hence why you don't look at them and hence why comments marked as spam will remain marked as spam even if they aren't actually spam. I'm not saying you should look through them (all) :paranoid:
