During the course of our daily activities we receive a lot of communication from members, in the interests of helping you get the right help in the quickest possible manner we have put together this guide on how to communicate efficiently with the CEA team.

Before contacting the CEA we ask that you do the following:

  • Check for a relevant +faq entry to make sure your question isn't already addressed there. This can save you a lot of time waiting for a response that you can easily access.

  • Check recent #communityops blogs to make sure that your issue hasn't been addressed there.

  • If reporting harassment, have you blocked the deviant and hidden their comments already?

  • Collect any relevant information about the issue, links to comments, journals or deviations

  • If the issue has upset you, take a few minutes to make sure you're calm before contacting us. This will help your tickets be clear and get the right information across.

Making first contact

Now that you are sure of what you want to report to us, it's important that you make sure you select the correct area for your report. Please report deviations via the "Report Deviation" link under the work you wish to report. Issues such as 3rd party copyright infringement reports will be redirected to this moderation system if sent in to the help desk.

For a break down of the help desk reports sections please read CEA Blog: Know Your Report Categories. Filing your ticket in the correct area will help you be responded to in an appropriate time by the people that usually address the issue you're report. This helps you get the best quality help and helps us answer tickets in a suitably timely manner.

In your initial contact with us, please try to include some relevant information so that we can know by quickly reading your ticket what the issue is. Information you should include is, what you are reporting, where it can be found, any other evidence that supports your report. Whilst we want extra information it is also important that we be able to understand your issue quickly, we get hundreds of reports a day, please don't include a lot of unnecessary background detail or conjecture, keep it straight forward and to the point.

This is an example of a good ticket:

Title: Deviant continuing to contact me after being blocked!

Yesterday I was contacted by the deviant $godofodd, he said a lot of mean things about me, so I blocked him. He then came back as $damphyr and said even more nasty things about me. Now he has come back as $kozispoon and keeps on harassing me. Every time I block his accounts he creates a new one, please look in to this.

Here are links to the mean comments, [link] [link] [link].

Thank you!
$y2jenn

This includes who is being reported, what they are doing and where they are doing it. We can look at this and quite clearly see the issue at hand and deal with it appropriately.

However this is an example of a bad ticket.

Title: Deviant is mean

They said lots of nasty things, ban them!

Who is being mean? Where is the evidence? What are they saying? Whilst a short, concise ticket is good, we need some information to understand what's going on.

Continuing the conversation

Whenever you speak to a CEA member, we will always do our best to be polite and give you the best help we can. Please do us the courtesy of returning the politeness. We understand that sometimes you're going to be upset when you contact or that we give you an answer that you may not wish to hear. But if you can keep calm, polite and discuss your opinions or problems with us, there's a good chance that we can come up with a final decision that hopefully both sides can agree on.

This doesn't just apply to conversations via the helpdesk, but via the "Report Deviation" tool and in blogs like this one. Whenever you communicate with us we'll try to be as polite and helpful as we can with you and we ask that you reciprocate that.

So, to recap;

  • Is there an +faq or blog about your problem?

  • Block and hide any offending comments or users.

  • Collect any relevant information regarding the issues.

  • Be calm, clear, concise and polite, we will do the same.

  • Treat us the way you want us to treat you!

WHAT IS CEA? Is this chat box a medium to communicate with CEA? or Should we write our problems as a private message to $dxd? where to write a problem about the blocked account. Tried help desk and chat but no one can unblock the account, they referred us to CEA. Any form of clarity on how to communicate with CEA will be highly appreciated.

You can contact the CEA by filing going to +help and selecting either Policy Inquiry or Abuse Report.

idk if anyone can help with this, but this website [link] is taking art from many Deviants without asking and are violating copyrights, including mine. this is a major issue and it has to be taken care of!

I am writing to complain about the recent banning of: [link].

According to the DA rules, no bodily fluids, penetration, or spreading by force of female genitalia are shown.

Included with this comment is a journal petition I started, addressing an issue such as this one. As you will see, I am not the only one who feels this way. We think this deviation was banned improperly and unnecessarily. You can find the journal and its comments at: [link].

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

That image hasn't been removed, it is from the gallery of a member that has been banned.

Additionally in response to that journal, we are bound by US law as to what we can and can not host here. We can not host images of a sexually explicit nature and allow minors to access our site. With that in mind we choose to allow minors and disallow sexually explicit images as it is more important to encourage minors to grow within the arts and provide them with a safe enviroment to do that in.

Thank you for your prompt response.

May we know why the member was banned? There are so many images on dA that are far more explicit than the one in question. Also, if the member is banned permanently, why is the image still showing?

The journal asks that a mature dA space be built to host more mature artwork, since apparently, the "Mature" filter and further warnings don't seem to be strong enough deterrents. The works would not necessarily be outright pornography, but the rules would be a bit less rigid than they are now. Artists with more mature works would be able to submit without the fear of being banned from this great site. Is this a possibility? If not, why please?

It's not that we don't care about the artistic growth of minors, we would simply like the opportunity to also grow creatively in a format such as this one.

Our privacy policy means that I can not share the details of why someone was banned with you. It has nothing to do with the image however and currently we do not remove images from banned members pages unless the image breaks policy.

We don't have the ability to create an extra "site" for mature content, such a site would require a lot of extra work to set up and run which we can't do right now and I don't think it's an area we want to go for.

I've used a computer for years. I was one of the first to predict that we would all have computers on our office desks while in NYC. But I AM new to uploading to sites like Deviant Art. (I love your site, thank you for doing this) Here's my problem. (If my message sounds blunt, it's only because I have tried everything and am a little frustrated. This has been going on for about a week.) :) When I try to submit a new piece, I always end up with a mess. I first tried submitting to the gallery and the prints separately. Then I tried submitting to the prints, then to the gallery to see if the order affected it. Then I tried submitting to the profile page through the submit button there. I eventually tried submitting to the gallery first, then to the print page through the continuation offered. I thought I had the problem solved. Using a 1MB image for the gallery and for the submission file. I use a 5 to 10 MB image for the prints so they will not break up (larger file request). I am revising images in my personal scans in the gallery and larger image folders to make sure the sizes work on your site. I just can't seem to get it right. One way or another I either end up with blank icons somewhere or I end up with multiple submissions. I'm close. but at the moment I can't see how to get my preview to show in the print category. (Here's where the frustration may affect my tone, I apologize in advance.)

Is there any chance that you might include a guide on a new user's page for submitting files? I know revamping the process to include step by step guides might be too much, but if there is a submit button on the profile page shouldn't that be enough? And shouldn't it guide you through the process step by step (which you pretty much have down right now) but finish properly without blank icons? If someone doesn't want something in the gallery but wants it included in the prints, then shouldn't a submission there not affect the gallery? (I guess I'm just logical. I know some sites find these problems as they upgrade their sites to accommodate its growth. Since they didn't anticipate the need for these steps at the outset when the meeting first take place and so the process often get complicated. Maybe that's the reason for the confusion.) I don't mean to question your fine work, but I'm at my wit's end. I'm spending more time trying to get this straight that I don't have time to draw, what with torturing the cats and irritating the neighbors.
Thanks so much, NewYorkRod
